Metis was a goddess, the ex-wife of Zeus, who had the ability to change shape into various creatures. In this mosaic she is becoming an eagle to escape Zeus who was after her. Zeus took the form of a suffocating fog. Unfortunately she did not escape, even after changing into many creatures.
