The knob at the bottom left is rotated which turns the gears beneath the skinny legs and causes the birds to fly and the sun to rotate. The arms can be swung back and forth by pressing the brass shoulder levers.
The entire sculpture spins on a ball-bearing base. Covering up one half of the top spindle reveals the profile of a face. Tiny brass birds fly through the holes in the brass time slices. The woman’s mouth opens to a smile then closes on the other side of the face plates.
