March 2005: David Vala Sculpture

David Vala' small-scale sculptural houses draw their inspiration from the past, but use contemporary shapes and forms to express his personal and spiritual journey.  Ritual clay architechal models have been found in many cultures and tombs.  Vala' sculptures were created as artifacts that tell a story through layers of the past and a patina of use.  To enhance their age, some have been rubbed with mineral pigments and pit fired in the earth.  Others have had several layers of finishes applied.  Smaller artifacts, oars and masks have been handcrafted and added to a piece.   An accompanying poem is added to explore each ones story.
