June 2022: Nadine Gay
After more than a decade of creating ceramic sculptures based on the human figure, I have started to explore biomorphic shapes that reflect my joy and deep appreciation of nature. During this pandemic, like many people, I found solace and joy in my garden, soaking in the beauty and peace of my surroundings. It led me to a new direction in my work and I started creating these colorful pieces. I imagined myself to be Alice in a Wonderland garden that was full of surprises and delights.
I hand build my forms with a combination of coil and slabs. After the bisque I fire them at cone 5 with underglazes. I then paint thin layers of oil paints to refine and enhance the surface. As in my previous work I combine found objects with the ceramic pieces.
