Tabor Porter & Chris Giffin

May 25-June 22

Check out our new PHOTO BLOG.
You'll find pictures from the opening.

Tabor Porter will be showcasing a variety of mixed media assemblages.  What gives Tabor’s work an indefinable stamp is that many of his components are fashioned by him.  Carved and painted wood, along with metalsmithing elements, comes to play in his recent work.  After many years of honing his skill as a metalsmith, creating silver jewelry, he began making assemblages.  The search for materials is as integral to the process for him as is the construction of the work. Now for the last two years he has been actively pursuing woodcarving. Tabor says “This is my history; the highs and lows; the good and bad.  Not literal or linear, but still a very intimate history.  I am 56 years old and I am just beginning to be aware that I am "fully living." I am so grateful to be here. It has been quite a ride, but it's only just beginning.”  Tabor has been living with HIV/AIDS for 25 years.

Chris Giffin creates one of a kind art from recycled materials and found objects.  Her sculptures are all figurative (animal and human) in some way.  There is an imaginative and fanciful thread that ties her cast of characters together. They suggest a quizzical and soulful nature. To quote Giffin, “It is in my nature to seek the unusual and find amusement in the discarded. The forms and surfaces of found objects seduce me. They enchant me with their elusive histories and memories.”  She uses a cold construction method, assembling all her pieces with nuts and bolts, wire, nails, etc. The ingredients in each piece are chosen for their beauty, mystery or whimsical spirit. The patina and aging of these parts is essentially the palette. “I create objects from materials that capture my eye, and that can be recycled materials or found objects. I try to take things that have had a past life and then give them a new life.”
